Why? Because they rely on ‘ME’ for success. For diet, I think I’ll apply for a ‘hardship scholarship’ at some weight loss organization. For resolutions, I better look into the Word to get some help. It turns out my problem is the size of my resolution and my source of dependency. I want to accomplish more than I am capable of, and I fail because I depend on me rather than my faith in Christ. I simply rely on ‘ME’ far too much.

“I said to the man who stood at the gate of the year, `Give me a light that I may see my way into the unknown.’ He said to me, `Step out into the darkness and put your hand in the hand of God. That is better than a light and better than a known way.’” -Author Unknown (The Christian Handbook)

John 13:37-38 “Peter asked, ‘Lord, why can’t I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.’ Then Jesus answered, ‘will you really lay down your life for me? I tell you the truth, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times!’”

Peter’s heart was in the right place. He truly believed he would follow through with his resolve, however, Christ knew better. The size of Peter’s resolve was bigger than he was able to give, and he was making a promise based on what he thought he could accomplish—not what he could accomplish through Christ.

In our enthusiasm promises come easily, but we should think of ourselves in accordance with the measure of faith God has given us (Romans 12:3 paraphrased). We demonstrate commitment step-by-step as we grow. As Christians, we are observed by others as we carry out our promises. There are things I want to accomplish this year, however, this year I want to think from my heart, promise what I know am capable of through Christ, and renew my faith in Christ as I find I can’t do it alone.
