What is SB26-097?

SB26-097, titled “Decriminalize Adult Commercial Sexual Activity,” is a bill currently before the Colorado legislature that would go far beyond what its name suggests. If passed, it would not simply remove criminal penalties from those selling sex — it would fully legalize the buying and selling of sex, as well as the operation of brothels, statewide. Colorado would become the first state in the nation to legalize prostitution in this way, setting a precedent with serious consequences for vulnerable people across the state.

 Why is it harmful?

The evidence against legalization is clear and consistent. Extensive international research — along with domestic data from states like Nevada, where prostitution is partially legal — shows that legalizing the commercial sex market reliably expands demand, emboldens traffickers, and makes it significantly harder for law enforcement to identify and prosecute coercion. When the market grows, exploitation grows with it, falling disproportionately on vulnerable women and minors with few other options. Rather than protecting those in the sex trade, legalization normalizes the commodification of human beings and puts profit over dignity.

What can you do?

Contact your Colorado state senator directly and urge them to vote NO on SB26-097. You can also reach out to your state representative, share information about the bill with your community, and encourage others to contact their legislators as well. Every voice counts, and elected officials pay attention when constituents speak up.
